There have been many times I wore an outfit I liked, but sometimes, something still felt slightly off. The overall look just didn’t feel as balanced as I imagined. I couldn’t always explain why - I just knew some outfits felt more flattering than others. Over time, I realised that for petite women, the difference is often not about size.
It is actually about "proportion".
What is the 1/3 rule?
One simple idea that helped me understand this is often called the 1/3 rule. Instead of visually cutting the body in half, the goal is to create a slightly unbalanced proportion: 1/3 on top + 2/3 on bottom.
This often helps create a more balanced silhouette. It does not change your height - but it can change how your outfit feels.

The key is to avoid a 50/50 split, which can visually shorten the leg line and make the body appear cut in half. Common examples include:
- Tops ending at the widest part of the hips
- Low-rise trousers
- Strong horizontal lines across the mid-section
Even when each piece is beautiful individually, the overall outfit may feel slightly less balanced.
What to do
A few small adjustments can make a noticeable difference. Use your outfit to visually raise the waistline and create the 1/3 top + 2/3 bottom proportion:
- Slightly shorter tops or a gentle tuck
- High-waisted trousers or skirts
- Adding a belt to define the waist
- Cropped jackets or structured layers

What if you prefer longer tops?
You can flip the ratio to 2/3 top + 1/3 bottom, but it tends to work best when:
→ your full legs are visible (such as mini skirts or shorts)
→ the outerwear is structured rather than oversized
→ the silhouette remains clean and intentional
For petites, showing more leg usually helps create length visually, so too much length on top can sometimes feel overwhelming.

It’s NOT always about your height. It’s about changing your silhouette, and how your body is visually divided. You’re creating an illusion of proportion. Once you understand proportions, getting dressed often feels easier - and confidence tends to follow.
When designing Ava & Sable pieces, proportion is considered from the very beginning. Each garment is thoughtfully created for petite proportions (5'4" / 164cm and under), helping create balance more naturally - because when clothing feels right, confidence often follows.
